Advice: Avoid OSX FontBook
Strong font management applications are few and far between, even for Mac
users, who tend to more commonly use fonts and design applications. Although
programs like Adobe Type Manager and Extensis Suitcase provide decent support
for previewing fonts and live activation, they still have numerous drawbacks.
Suitcase can be very slow while just previewing fonts, and Type Manager runs
only in OS9.
With the recent release of OSX 10.3 Jaguar, Apple was putting their foot in the
game with an app of their own called FontBook. Although possibly a well-intentioned
step, the application should be strongly avoided except for those people who
use only a small amount of fonts. For anybody else, the program will drag the
operating system to a halt if too many fonts are added. Instead of just disabling
fonts, FontBook will actually throw the font files in the trash. Most font applications
will lock fonts used by the system since they are necessary for use by most applications.
FontBook allows the user to disable or even delete them without knowing that
they are needed for the Operating System to run correctly.
